BASIONYM: Nupela carolina Potapova and Clason 2003
Contributor: Marina Potapova - October 2010
Length Range: 5-15 µm
Width Range: 2.4-4.4 µm
Striae in 10 µm: 42-54
Valves elliptical-lanceolate. The smallest cells may become oval. Frustule slightly bent in girdle view. The distance between central raphe endings is slightly longer on the convex valve than on the concave valve. Terminal raphe fissure forming a curved opening to the primary side of the valve. Axial area linear, narrow. Central area square or lyre-shaped, formed by interrupted central striae, often with several isolated areolae, appearing convex under LM. Transapical striae radiate, 42-54 in 10 μm. Outer areolae openings are slightly transapically elongate, covered by hymenes lying flush with the valve surface. Inner openings of areolae are small, round or oval foramina.
