Description
The valves are lanceolate, constricted slightly in the center and tapering towards the ends to form rounded apices. The fibulae are of varying sizes, numbering 12-16 in 10 µm. A central nodule is present. The striae are faint.

The valve margin is constricted at the center. A central nodule is present and fibulae are variable in size.
Compare
Nitzschia balcanica is frequently misidentified as N. capitellata in samples from the US. Nitzschia balcanica differs by having much finer striae (Hustedt lists ca. 40 in 10 µm for it versus 30-32 in 10 µm for N. capitellata).
