BASIONYM: Navicula subtilissima var. micropunctata Germain 1981
SYNONYM(S): Kobayasia micropunctata (Germain) Lange-Bertalot 1996 | Navicula micropunctata (Germain) Kobayasi & Nagumo 1988
REPORTED AS: Navicula subtilissima (Hustedt 1961-1966, p. 89, fig. 1235)
Contributor: Loren Bahls - March 2012
Length Range: 19-23 µm
Width Range: 3.5-4.3 µm
Striae in 10 µm: difficult to resolve in LM
Valves are linear-lanceolate with convex sides and capitate apices. Length-to-width ratio ranges from 4.9 to 6.0. The raphe is filiform and straight. Proximal raphe ends are distinctly expanded. Distal raphe ends are bent in the same direction. The axial area is narrow. The central area is elliptic and barely wider than the axial area. Individual striae are difficult to resolve in LM, except near the central area, where they are radiate and more widely spaced.

NADED ID:
Kobayasiella micropunctata has been reported from two floating-mat fens in northwestern Montana. In one of these fens (Drosera Pond), pH was 8.46 and specific conductance was 19 µS/cm. Here it is found with K. okadae, K. parasubtilissima, and K. subtilissima. Kobayasi & Nagumo (1988) report this taxon from a pond in Japan with a pH of 6.8 and specific conductance of 131 µS/cm.
