Diatom identification guide & ecological resource

for water resource managers, ecologists, taxonomists, analysts, systematists, students, and the public.

We aim to help you find accurate information about diatoms of the United States of America, even if you are just browsing.

Our expert contributors are submitting text and images for each North American genus and species, including taxonomic and ecological information.

Our project organizer is creating composite illustrations for all taxa (examples to the right).  For many species, she is also compiling environmental response plots and geographic distribution maps.

Our editorial review board is ensuring the scientific merit of each submission and directing site development.

We continue to grow!  We're funding expert contributors to create pages for common diatom species (and species that are easily confused with them). We're also adding more genera and images of genera. Current numbers of genera and species are shown to the right, below the diatom images. Stay posted!

Would you like to contribute species or genus content?  We encourage analysts, students, taxonomists and others to contact us about becoming a contributor.  Please see:
